Molecular self-assembly at surface and interfaces/surface confined polymerization reactions

* * * * *
Molecular self-assembly on surfaces is a promising strategy for fabrication of nano-objects. Many complex architectures have been created on surfaces using various intermolecular interactions (Van der Waals, H-bon, etc.). However, these structures are fragile because intermolecular interactions are week, which leads to unstable nanostructures.

The direct control of molecular interconnections on surfaces via covalent bonds offers a way to overcome these limitations. Several experiments have shown the possibility of obtaining nanostructures linked by covalent bonds. Of note is the variety of reactions and different activation mechanisms employed to form these nanostructures, for example: formation of imines, dehydration, esterification and the coupling of radicals and carbenes. These experiments open a new field of research.

My specific goal in our research focuses on the molecular self-assembly on metallic surfaces and catalytic growth of polymer structures in 2D. To develop this project we will require use organic chemistry (synthesis of molecules) and surface science techniques as STM, LEED/Auger and XPS.
