Engineering 2D molecular nanostructures at surfaces

* * * * *
The design and construction of new functional 2D (planar) nano-structured networks have been one of the most intensive research topics in supramolecular chemistry in resent years. The research was originally motivated by the use of such 2D nanostructures as functional units in a variety of scaled-down electronic devices like waveguides, sensors or actuators or using supramolecular networks as templates for the growth of defect-free 3D materials using atom-by-atom, molecule-by-molecule bottom-up approach. Ultimately, 2D nano-structured networks could be used as templates for the growth of meta-materials. That is materials that display properties, which are not readily available in Nature. For instance, those with negative refractive index. My work at INRS is focused on the development of such 2D nano-structured materials (based on basic pi-conjugated polymers) those properties could be harnessed later for the variety of novel opto-electronic and/or nano-template applications. The research is performed under both ultra-high vacuum and ambient environment conditions and employing cutting edge scanning tunnelling microscopy instrumentations and a century-old Ullmann reaction.
Another project where I am active is the development of diamond-like carbon (DLC) based anti-bacterial coatings. These coatings are heavily doped thin-films (with thickness ranging from tens of nano-meters to several microns) synthesised by means of hydrocarbon plasma immersion or CVD on surgical stainless steel tools.
